The founder of Carhartt coats and the company was Hamilton Carhartt. He was born in 1855 in New York. He was raised in the southern part of Michigan. To be recognized as special, he added the extra “t” to the company name. He wanted everyone to see that he stood above the rest. His first buyer made him realize that specialty products would help him to do just that. They needed to be unique and different from what is available. Hamilton Carhartt, the avid creator, talked to a railroad engineer about his needs and formed his first outerwear garment with those needs in mind.
Creating The Vision
In 1859, the Carhartt Company came into being. They started producing Carhartt coats and other work attire that would be able to show excellence and a standard that was higher than others of the day. The company began with four sewing machines and five people on the payroll. His first overalls were made from duck cotton and denim fabric. With each visit Hamilton made to the railroad divisions in many towns around the area, he created a lucrative business start for himself. His brand became known for being a good product and produced a high reputation.
A Let Down
During the 1930’s and the Great Depression, only three of the Carhartt plants were still open for production. Hamilton and his son worked together on a campaign to open the Irvine Kentucky branch. The administrative offices are still there now. Seventeen plants exist today as does three mills. No longer is production limited to the United States but has branched out into Canada and Europe. Special Carhartt fabric was created to be made into Carhartt coats and other garments. It is still produced today and has become one of the greatest elements in the Carhartt coats and other garments.
The End Of A Life
Hamilton Carhart passed away in 1937. He was 82 years old. His family has carried on the tradition of making fine Carhartt coats and outerwear for the masses today. They are still in business and hold the best reputation for the finest products to protect against the elements. There is no reason for them to stop producing the best Carhartt coats and outerwear. Many construction workers and others depend on this brand to provide them with warmth and comfort as the railroad workers did over two hundred years ago when Hamilton Carhart produced his first set of overalls. The tradition of quality craftsmanship is still apparent in today’s quality of garments.
